Attend as Many Events as PossibleTher es an unstated expectation that you come to networking events to support people. As a result, there are many people who are more than willing to help perfect strangers find a job, exchange contacts, or give meaningful advice, says Michael Price, author of What Next? The Millennials Guide to Surviving and Thriving in the Real World. But the key is to meet those people face-to-face. In other words, get off social media and abflug making real, human connections because no one can tell how charming you are over email.2. Set Networking GoalsBefore attending any event, you should have a clear purpose of why youre going, says Ricardo Trigueiro, director of international marketing for image and brand development firm CHUVA group. Is it to meet as many people as possible to build your contact list? Or is it to meet a particular person? Then make sure to accomplish your goal before the event is over.3. Order Business CardsIt may seem old school, but its still simpler to pranke people a card a s opposed to hovering over them as they input your info into a cell phone. Plus, you cant hand your resume to everyone you meet, but you can leave a card behind without seeming overbearing, adds Kathy Condon, author of Face-to-Face Networking Its All About Communication. Exchanging cards with an important contact will then allow you to follow up with a resume later.If you dont have an existing business card, you can create a simple one for yourself that includes your name, address, phone number, and email, along with links to any relevant business sites, like a LinkedIn account or a personal website that displays your work or portfolio. A stack of cards wont cost much, either. Online print shops, like Vistaprint and Moo, offer options in the $10 to $25 range.4. Use a Contacts Manager AppThe new people you meet can easily get lost amid the hundreds of contacts you log into your email address book and various social networking accounts. Craft the Perfect Reply to What Do You Do?It may sound like a no-brainer, but you want to tell someone about your job in a way that encourages conversation as opposed to shutting it down, says Trigueiro. Delete Eyebrow-Raising Online PicsEmployers are likely to check out social media when researching prospective candidates, so your online presence on every account- whether thats Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook- should be professional, says Parker Geiger, CEO of the CHUVA group. That means no photos showing you drinking with friends on the beach or couple shots.If you cant quite bring yourself to delete those old spring break albums, at least make sure your privacy settings are at their tightest. Create Resume ExtensionsIf you want to stand out from the competition, listing your extracurricular activities on a piece of paper is no longer enough, Geiger says. For example, adding your Habitat for Humanity volunteer work to your resume doesnt bring the experience to life. Instead, post pictures of yourself working on the house on LinkedIn or brief videos of you w orking with other volunteers on YouTube. You can also add these as links within your resume in Word, PDF format, or on a personal career website.9. ASMEs Nominees Chosen for the 2016 New Faces of Engineering ProgramDiscoverE has selected six ASME members and student members as finalists in the 2016 New Faces of Engineering program, which annually highlights the important contributions early career engineers and engineering students are making to the profession and to society. Society members Bryony DuPont, Ph.D., Dylon Rockwell and Yi Zheng, Ph.D., were named as ASMEs nominees in the New Faces of Engineering-Professional category, which recognizes the accomplishments of practicing engineers up to the age of 30. ASME student members Drew Haxton, Nicholas Russell and Jacob Steinmetz were selected as the Societys nominees in the New Faces-College Edition program, which highlights the achievements of third-, fourth- and fifth-year engineering students. Bryony DuPontThe finalists from ASME and the other societies participating in this years DiscoverE New Faces of Engineering program were announced last week during Engineers Week. The official winners in each category will be announced in the April 8 issue of ASME News.ASMEs first New Faces-Professional nominee, Bryony DuPont, is an assistant prof of mechanical engineering at Oregon State University. Dr. DuPont conducts research in artificial intelligence and sustainability science, using simulation, optimization, and advanced computation to make sustainable solutions more realistically feasible. She is the co-lead of the ASME Early Career Engineering Committees Design and Advanced Manufacturing Market Segment Team and has served as a reviewer, review coordinator and workshop organizer for the Societys zwischenstaatlich Design Engineering Technical Conferences (IDETC). DuPont received a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 2008. She earned a both a masters degree and a Ph.D. in mechanic al engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2010 and 2013, respectively. Dylon Rockwell Dylon Rockwell, ASMEs second New Faces-Professional finalist, is an airframe design and integration engineer at the Boeing Company in Ridley, Pa., where he serves as a principal investigator for manufacturing technologies. A Boeing employee since 2011, Dylon was assigned to the companys V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft program and later went on to perform analysis for Boeings Crew Space Transportation (CST-100) Starliner, Space Launch System and Sikorsky Boeing SB1 Defiant programs to quantify and mitigate assembly risk. A member of ASME since 2013, Dylon is a new member of the Societys Y14.46 Committee Support Group. He received a bachelors degree in aeronautics and astronautics engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2011, and a masters degree in systems engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2015. Yi ZhengThe Societys third nominee in the professional cat egory, Yi Zheng, is an assistant professor at the University of Rhode Island, where he leads the Micro and Nanoscale Energy Laboratory. Dr. Zhengs research interests include nanoscale thermal transport phenomena, Casimir interactions, thermal and mechanical properties of nanostructured materials, and their applications in green energy conversion and harvesting. He serves as a reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed journals, including the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer and the ASME Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering Applications, and as a reviewer, topic chair, and session chair or co-chair for various conferences including the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and the ASME Micro/Nanoscale Heat Mass Transfer International Conference. He received a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, in 2009. He received a masters degree and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Columbia University in 2011 and 2014, respectiv ely. Drew HaxtonOne of the Societys three New Faces-College Edition finalists, Drew Haxton, is a second-time nominee in the category. Haxton, who was also a nominee last year, is a student at Daniel Webster College in Nashua, N.H., where he is majoring in both mechanical engineering and aeronautical engineering. A former vice president and chair of his schools ASME student chapter, Haxton is now serving as president of the chapter. Participating in ASME events as a freshman helped me blossom into the aspiring engineer I am today, he said in his application. Now as a senior and president of the ASME chapter, I make sure to put on a wide variety of events to help students embrace engineering the saatkorn way I did. Haxton is also active in a number of clubs at his school, including the student humanitarian group Kenya Connection and the schools music and outdoor activities clubs. Nicholas RussellNicholas Russell, ASMEs second nominee in the New Faces-College Edition category, is a mechanical engineering major at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tenn. Russell, who currently serves as vice president of the universitys Student Government Association, is involved in a number of student activities at Tennessee Tech. His current posts include student regent on the Tennessee Board of Regents, College of Engineering Student Ambassador, and member of the schools academic affairs and student affairs councils, among others. A student member of ASME since 2013, described ASME as a great asset in his application. ASME has been an amazing source of support and friends, he wrote. Young engineers need the guidance of juniors and seniors in their programs to help them decide what major to choose, what classes to take, and what professors are the best. ASME provided me with all of this, as well as a training ground to learn skills like 3D modeling and simulation which proved to be very valuable in my two jobs. Jacob SteinmetzASMEs third College Edition fin alist, Jacob Steinmetz, is majoring in mechanical engineering at Iowa State University. Steinmetz is a member of Iowa States renewable energy vehicle club and a member of the schools peer tutoring program, assisting other students on subjects including Statics, Mechanics of Materials, and Introduction to Materials Engineering. Like his two fellow College Edition nominees, Steinmetz also credits his participation as an ASME student member with being beneficial to his college experience and future employment prospects. bedrngnis only have I been able to meet peers in my field, but I have also had the opportunity to network with employers and staff members, he said in his New Faces application. But if your team is experiencing a might blizzard that takes you away from the office for many days, you might be more motivated to keep your timelines intact if you act as if youre in person, according to career expert Michael Dermer.This means getting dressed (yes, sorry, put on pants) and setting up video meetings instead of phone calls, WiFi willing, of course. One way to hold yourself accountable to this is to use video for your conference calls throughout the day. This will require you to be on your game - no different than if you were in your office, he explains.Schedule breaksEven when youre at work, you dont look at your computer every second of every day. So why would you expect to stay glued at home? Though you do need to stay on some sort of schedule, its also important to give yourself breaks as you would with any other workday, according to career expert Jill Tipograph.Plan in actual breaks to eat and stretch. If you are not accustomed to working solo, its easy to get caught up in what you are doing and forget to eat no collea gues nearby means no one signaling the lunch hour, she explains. Your work at home day should never make you feel that you had a setback, it should, if you plan it out, make you feel super-efficient.Finish the hardest thing firstThough it seems counterproductive when your brain feels foggy in the early A.M., Dermer shares the most successful of professionals knows the values of checking off the hard stuff, stat.Too many times we take the tasks that require the most gray matter and we leave them to the end of the day. Imagine writing the strategic plan after a full day or work, and an evening full of family, he explains. Tackle the hardest task first thing in the morning. Not only will you bring your best, but it will set you up for a productive rest of the day.Turn off your devices and emailWhen you really need to focus on completing a project, sending out a report or completing another task that requires your attention, you need to let go of the one item you give all of your attent ion to. Its essential but your iPhone or Android can take your attention away with every last ping, buzz, and ring. Same goes with email if your company tends to shoot off more than they frankly need.Turn off your smartphone and put it on the other side of the room. When you are immersed in a project, turn off your email. Remember, when we are at home we often crave distractions, and while leaving our email open may satisfy this craving, it saps our productivity, he continues. Phones off. emaille closed. Then tackle the task at hand.Set some boundariesAnd not just by closing the door so your pup doesnt attempt to sit on your lap all day. The key, according to Greger, is the interface between the prosthetics and nerve messengers to the brain.Its not just telling the fingers to move. The brain has to know the fingers have moved as directed, Greger says.The goal is to create limbs that patients will use as true extensions of themselves. To accomplish this, the team is seeking to establish two-way communication between a user and a new prosthetic limb so that it is capable of controlling more than 20 different movements.Markers are applied t o the patients functioning pfote in order to measure hand posture. reputation Kevin ONeill/ASUIn the recent research, the team implanted an array of electrodes in two nerves in the arms of two amputees for 30 days. The electrodes were stimulated with varying degrees of amplitude and frequency to determine how the parteicipants perceived the stimulation. Then, as the subjects controlled fingers of a virtual robotic hand, neural activity was recorded during intended movements of their phantom fingers, and 13 specific movements were decoded.Greger says the motor and sensory information from the microelectrode arrays indicated that patients outfitted with a highly dexterous prosthesis controlled with such a two-way interface might begin to think of the prosthesis as an extension of themselves. The idea is that a participant controls a virtual prosthetic hand by thinking about moving the amputated hand, and the nerve signals are recorded by microelectrodes. A computer algorithm decodes t he signals and controls the virtual prosthetic hand.Prof. Bradley Greger works to refine the process to control fine finger movements. Image Terry Grant/ASUIts not like we need any fundamental breakthrough, Greger says. We need some good engineering and sufficient resources. He says the biggest fundamental engineering challenge is longevity, as the devices must last at least a decade.The issue is a robustly engineered electrode of the right materials that is also compliant, he explains. It has to be a little bit more biological. Its got to move and shift and be flexible like the nerve that it is interfacing with. A lot of the approaches have come from an electrical engineering background where they approach it from a rigid circuit connector.This work, coming from an electronic perspective, focuses on one-to-one mapping of the finger movements, Greger says. They dont look at the hand as a mechanical device, something that works synergistically.The real exciting opportunity is to thin k about the neural code not as one-to-one mapping when I move my index finger, but when I do this whole kind of posture with my hands, there is real synergy. The challenge is how to get the neural signal thats operating in full synergy to talk to a mechanical device thats set up to also move with the synergies, he says.In part because of his background, Greger is taking a different approach. He earned bachelors degrees from Washington State University in both philosophy (that led him to thinking about theory of the mind) and biology. Those paved the way to neuroscience, and as a graduate student at Washington University in St. Louis, he developed an interest in studying neuronal encoding in primates and humans. Like everyone did in the 1990s, I started thinking, How can this help some people? he recalls. As a post doc, he focused on neuroengineering and began investigating the use of microelectrode arrays in neuroprosthetics at Caltech. He joined ASU in 2013.For the next phase of th e study, markers will be applied to the patients healthy hand to record its movements, and then these measurements will be used to direct the virtual hand, with the patient using an Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. Another team member, Kevin ONeill, a doctoral student at ASU, is developing technology that allows the patient to see what the virtual limb is doing and decodes the neural messages that enable the motion to happen.Once the team learns what information the signals hold, a neural decoding system can be built to direct the prosthesis so that it becomes almost intuitive. There will be some learning curve because we will be introducing them to a fairly complex system that listens to the nerve and takes those signals that used to control the handnow goneand use them to control the prosthetic hand, Greger says. We are hopeful that it will be more intuitive and it is very important that there is some sensory feedback so when they touch something, they get some sense that they touched something. That will really help them have a sense of embodiment. It really becomes like their hand.Were working toward limbs that are accessible both financially and in terms of usability... something that is maybe not quite as sophisticated as the expensive ones but certainly better than the current generation of prosthetic hands, Greger says.He believes that the end technology may have much broader applications in controlling organ systems, dealing with, for example, high blood pressure.
