Corn Heads Community
Corn Heads Community 0 Flares 0 Flares Just about a month ago I added a new page to COTJ called Corn Heads, and if you ever ventured to that section you would have found yourself a nice little teaser. After weeks of torture, I will now finally explain what the hell is going on, and how you can get involved What is the Corn Head Community? When I created Corn on the Job I wanted it to become a place where people could learn a thing or two and also connect with people that would add value in their life. Readership here on COTJ is made up of HR/Recruiting folks, job seekers, organizations that sell HR/Recruiting technology, professional resume writers, students who will soon be entering the work force, and many amazing bloggers. Each of you has something to offer one another, and Ive created this community so that connections can be made. When you officially become a Corn Head, you will have a chance to promote yourself on the Corn Head page with a 40-50 word bio, and a picture of yourself. Your bio can include links to your Blog, Linkedin, Facebook, your company, or anywhere. This is a chance to promote yourself and make connections. If you are a job seeker maybe you can talk about the job or career you are targeting and then include a link to your Linkedin account. Get the point? I will send you a pretty nifty T-shirt in the mail, and then your job will be to take a picture of yourself in that shirt and send back your 40-50 word bio. Click here for a preview of what the page will look like. How can you get involved? When you join the community you receive an awesome t-shirt and a fun way to promote yourself. I wanted to make the cost of the shirt/community to be as low as possible. Here are details on cost: Shirt Size S, M, L, XL $12.75 (shipping included) Shirt Size 2XL and 3XL $13.75 (shipping included) Buying a shirt grants you access to the Corn Head Community. All payment will be through PayPal, and once you e-mail me with interest and your t-shirt size I will send you an invoice through PayPal. I had initially bought 70 shirts, and am now down to 40 shirts. If you are interested, me an e-mail to CornOnTheJob AT Gmail.com and I will send you full details!

5 Things You Need For A Productive Job Search
5 Things You Need For A Productive Job Search In order to have the most productive job search, you should add these things to your action list. Because landing a new job today requires some new strategies. The things you need for a productive job search may not be what you think. Im not going to talk about your resume or a good pitch! (If you want a list of those things, go here) This post is about the right mental outlook and strategy! In all honesty, your role as a job seeker requires you have dedication and fortitude! You need grit! But thats a different topic and you can find an example here of what you need to do to find a job. Theres a saying that finding a job is a full-time job. Do you know what your daily/weekly job-seeking responsibilities are? Here you go! Job Search Activities Its been my experience that job seekers who omit or shortchange one of the four parts end up frustrated, discouraged or involved in a long job search. A Productive Job Search Requires These 5 Things FOCUS Successful job seekers have focus in four areas. When you can answer as many of these questions as possible, you should see an increase in the quality of your job search materials and outcomes: What is the job title/occupation you are searching for? What skills/experience do you have that directly match roles you are interested in and what are you lacking? Who are the companies hiring for positions you are seeking? Who do you need to talk to in order to gain inside information? If you have difficulty answering some of these questions, its time to arrange informational meetings with people who can advise and offer information and help you fill the void of information you need. It isnt enough to know the answers. You will want to communicate your goals clearly and in terms people can understand. Have you ever heard someone say: I am a project manager (or insert any job title here) and I am looking for a job just like the one I used to have. Do you know enough information to help them? Unless your company has a project manager job, there is little help you can offer. What if the job seeker said, I organize the work required to launch new software used by accountants. I am interested in learning more about what XYZ and ABC companies are doing and what software they plan on developing next. Do you know anyone who works at those companies? This question is more specific, and while the person you are talking to may not have an answer, they do know what to be on the lookout for. GOALS You should also establish clear goals for managing your job search. Daily or weekly goals might include things like: Arrange a meeting with [insert name of person] at ABC company to learn about the requirements of a [specific job]. Establish the right online reputation by monitoring and creating positive and brand-consistent content. Meet five new contacts who stay up to date with the industry and/or occupation. Investigate additional educational opportunities to enhance skills. Become active in local professional associations. You may want to check out my list of 20 things every job seeker needs. STRUCTURE Many job seekers miss the routine of going to work. If this is the first time youve been solely in charge of managing a major project, you may not be familiar with how to manage all the moving parts. Job seekers who have created a job-search routine tend to be more productive. These are areas to pay attention to: Prioritize activities Create to-do lists Manage time Schedule follow-up Creating a to-list generally isnt always enough structure. Try blocking time in increments and assigning tasks like I show you here. DISCIPLINE Focus and structure are nothing without discipline. Following through on promises made (to yourself or others) can be challenging when you are juggling multiple balls. It is easy to let the items on your to-do list slip when you are preparing for an interview or creating a résumé and cover letter for a job you are very interested in. And to be honest, the demands in your personal life also have a way of sidetracking your structured job-search activities. Here are some pointers to avoid becoming overwhelmed or stressed. Dont give up too soon. It takes about 30 days to start a new habit or break an old one. Keep applying for jobs and following up until you receive a job offer. Be realistic about what you can achieve and how long it will take. Use positive self-talk. Dont beat yourself up. Celebrate the things you do well, and dont obsess over what you are not good at doing. ACCOUNTABILITY Attempting to run your job search alone is like training for a marathon without a coach or fellow runners. You will need to hold yourself accountable for sticking with the plan. Its really hard to do this all alone. Plus you want people you can turn to for advice on how to approach scenarios you havent encountered before and get feedback. You are too close to the forest to see the trees and will want an objective eye to help you make decisions. You will also need motivation. Here are some suggestions: Enlist the help of a past manager or mentor to offer objective feedback. Join a job seekers networking group to learn what other job seekers have done. Communicate with family and friends and ask for their support. Hire a coach if you can. The longer your job search lasts, the more difficult it becomes to land a job. Make the necessary fixes before it is too late. By the way, finding focus, creating structure, implementing discipline and holding yourself accountable will not only help you in your job search; developing these skills will also assist you in your new job. Top 5 Reasons Why My Marriage Works - When I Grow Up
Top 5 Reasons Why My Marriage Works - When I Grow Up Today is my 5 month anniversary, while I cant bill myself as some Big Authority when it comes to making a marriage work, I have no doubt that my husband will be The One forever. Why? Because: We have the same foundation. This means our values and priorities are similar we both value family above all else, but also hold our artistic endeavors, financial stability, and our friendships with high regard. Our timing was right. We found each other when we were both about a year out of long-term, live-in relationships without a serious relationship in between. I think we were both equally cautious about starting something serious again, while also both wanting a lasting relationship. We treat each other with respect. There was a time when I was uncomfortable with the fact that my husband I have never had a fight (weve been together for 3 years), but that didnt last for long. If a relationship feels like a struggle or a battle every day, its not The One for you. His friends my friends have become Our Friends, and the same goes for our families. This wasnt some sacrifice either I genuienly believe that if I met His Friends first, they would have been My Friends. And I know that even when The Girls invade our apartment Luke doesnt retreat because he likes the conversation (at least he does before the What do guys really want in a girl? and Do guys really talk about their sex lives to each other? questions start shooting in his direction). We respect our time together we respect our time apart. This might boil down to trust, but Im wary of couples that do EVERYTHING together as well as those that do NOTHING together. My hubby and I respect each others Girls Nights Out and Boys Nights Out, but always invite each other to every other social occasion. I think that if you have to boil it down to a feeling besides love, its luck. Luck that you found this spectacular person, luck that he fell for you (of all people!), luck that you get to spend the rest of your life with him..I feel lucky each and every day that I have with Luke. If you dont have a Valentines today one that you can give an l word to (love, luck, or lust!) then use this day to honor yourself for not being in a relationship that wastes the pretty. It takes strength to not get caught in a romance (or marriage!) where you dont feel lucky each and every day (although you might feel comfortable, or content, or another c word like crazy?). Use this Hallmark Holiday to celebrate your strength!* *Or drink cosmopolitans with your girlfriends. Either way..fun!

Why And How You Should Always Be Job Searching - Work It Daily
Why And How You Should Always Be Job Searching - Work It Daily You may have heard the smartest people are always on the offense, always looking out for themselves, and constantly seeking to improve. All of these things are true both in life and in your career. Although this is not the case every time, a common way to move up and advance in your career is to change companies. Itâs likely most positions within your company are currently filled, and you may feel like those above you are not going anywhere anytime soon, which is probably true. Related: Are You âAwesomeâ For The Job, According To Hiring Managers? If you are serious about advancing and improving your position, it is imperative to constantly be looking for opportunities, whether they are internal or external. Hereâs Why: You may be thinking: I love my job, why would I job hunt while Iâm satisfied? Unfortunately, your job is almost never fully secure. I have seen many completely satisfied employees come into work one day to find out that due to financial troubles, their position has been terminated. The truth is, you can easily be blindsided and realize you need a new job in an instant. On the other hand, you may already want to leave and not even realize it. Many employees get complacent and hold the mindset they couldnât be successful elsewhere. The philosophy behind always âjob searchingâ is simply staying on the offense, staying aware. Job searching doesnât have to mean sending in your resume every week, but rather being aware of what other opportunities are currently available on a fairly regular basis. By staying aware and current, you are constantly keeping yourself relevant and open to new things. Hereâs How: A friend of mine--a very successful woman in her respective field--is an example of the merit in always staying on the offense. She had the unfortunate experience of losing her job through the downsizing of the company and took that opportunity to learn a valuable lesson: expect the unexpected. She states she will âforever be job searching,â even though she landed another impressive position and currently holds it. In order to prepare for something like losing your job or wanting a change, stay on top of whatâs going on in companies you would like to work for or positions you seek to fill. For example, if you are a Mustang lover and have always wanted to work around them, stay up-to-date with a company like CJ Pony Parts for any job openings you may be interested in. Whether this means interacting with them on social media, visiting their offices or staying current with their job listings, it will help when something does pop up. As a benchmark, you should update and revise your resume every 6 months to a year and have a constant list of your top five industry connections. Stay in contact with colleagues from previous jobs and keep an online presence current; someone may end up reaching out to you. These things change over time and will be helpful to have in the event of striving toward a new position. It may seem foreign to always be on the job hunt, but it is always best to be prepared and know what else is out there. You may find positions listed similar to yours are all at a higher pay rate and it may be time to ask for a raise. Andrew Grove, former CEO of Intel and lead thinker in the development of Silicon Valley, famously stated, âOnly the paranoid survive.â Staying âparanoidâ and informed will give you a leg up on competition and ideally help you achieve all of your professional goals. How I Use Silent Retreats to Build My Career
How I Use Silent Retreats to Build My Career Like many ambitious young women dead-set on building my own successful business, I spent several decades running. I thought staying busy and productive welches the key to achieving my goals. Now that Im 54 and a mentor to many young people, one of the first pieces of advice I share is to take time away from the world to really sink into yurself and the wellspring of creativity thats inside each of us.Living in Idaho and Utah for fruchtwein of my life, Ive met many people who can just go off into the mountains and gain clarity and creativity. That is so not me. I love the outdoors and find inspiration in nature, but camping has never been my forte I certainly do not find it relaxingWhen I really want to go within and do deep creative work, I need to be put in time-out. Retreats create that for me.That special time in retreat, and now in my daily meditation practice, is like going on a date with my own soul. In the beginning, they were spars e, a bit awkward, and restrictive. But as Ive gotten older, I treat myself to retreats with softer accommodations, amenities, and delicious food. This helps me remember that my time away is about being kind to myself. From this gentler, safer space, I can connect and watch my emotions rise and fall, allow my thoughts to flow through me, and give myself permission to feel and to heal. I believe our souls are here for the purpose of healing, and retreats are how I honor that journey. Its done wonders for me as a human being, as well as for my business.I became curious about meditation after I heard the Dali Lama speak in Sun Valley, Idaho, almost 13 years ago.All of the running around Id done welches starting to catch up with me drinking too much, not making healthy decisions in my relationships, and feeling stuck with my business.I began to notice that when I did take time to slow down, I felt really uncomfortable with myself. After Dali Lamas talk, I decided to do something about it . I started researching and reading about meditation and mindfulness.I attended my first three-day silent retreat at Spirit Rock in the Bay Area. If you think silent retreats sound like meditation on steroids, you arent wrong. It was brutal. All it took was one day to notice how crazy my mind really was I was alone with my never-ending stream of thoughts, including many not-so -nice thoughts about myself. For the next two days, all I could think about was how to get out of there. I concocted story after story of what I could say to be released. Finally, I realized what I really wanted was to run away from myself. As the third day came to a close, I was hooked. Something inside me woke up and started calling me. This time, it wasnt the voices in my head it was my heart. That first retreat was a pretty simple structure Vipassana meditation and it exposed me to some powerful teachers and life-changing ideas. Generally, on a silent retreat, you only speak when conversing with your teac her, and sometimes, thats only at the conclusion of the retreat. And those high-quality accommodations I mentioned earlier? Those arent typical of rigid meditation retreats, so be sure to check before you sign up if that matters to you.Even though it was really hard those first two days, I loved getting a taste of the creativity that comes from sitting quietly for long stretches. It inspired me to sign up for a weeklong retreat not long after. Im glad I did, because I found that after I allowed my mind to jump around for a few day without engaging, I could finally start to let go, and thats when the magic really happens. In 2012, I was about to sign a lease to open my third LunchboxWax waxing salon. Something kept me from signing before I left for my retreat. While there, a moment of clarity struck me my business is not just a waxing business it is so much more. I started to believe that I could use my life experiences to help others. The floodgates opened, and I started to visualiz e a business created with the sole purpose of empowering young women. I knew deep down that a lot of people were going to want to be a part of this. The idea to franchise came to me I still dont know where the first thought came from, and I dont question it. When I got out of my retreat, I immediately started researching. I was lit up everything inside me said this was the right path. LunchboxWax was going to become a franchise. Ive never looked back and have learned (and re-learned) to always listen to my gut. My best big ideas still come to me during stillness. We can all do unbelievable work with a clear mind.Once I established a regular meditation practice, I began to see all the creativity I missed in regular life because I couldnt seem to slow down. I started writing and painting again after 30 years of being too busy for that sort of thing, even though I loved it. Taking time for silence is much bigger than just not talking. To me, its about opening up to creativity, whether thats writing, art, or business. Now, twice a year, I carve out a week for a silent retreat. With more than 10 years of daily meditation and biannual silent retreats as my foundation, Im now passionate about incorporating mindfulness into my business, including offering mindfulness training for waxologists. Growing a wax-only salon franchise that specializes in Brazilians might not seem like the type of company that benefits from mindfulness, but I truly believe its at the heart of our culture-first business. We serve people in intimate ways that can bring up feelings of vulnerability. Having a strong sense of self-awareness, good communication skills and boundaries are important for any team to thrive, including in my business. If you are just getting started in your practice or want to learn more, I recommend checking out by Chande-Meng Tan is a must-read. He was one of Googles earliest engineers who retired with the title Jolly Good Fellow in 2015, and the book helps business lead ers implement the skills of mindfulness without too much woo-woo.More on mindfulness5 Hobbies To Help You Find Your ZenHow We Worked Well-Being Into Our Company Culture
